Flip That Pitch!

With #Pitmad #PitchMAS and #SFFpit coming up this month there’s a lot of pitch writing going on! It can take time to create a great pitch and then…WHAT? Twitter won’t let you post the same tweet more than once. Talk about frustrating!

Sure, you can come up with a number of pitches but when you have a good one you want to make the most of it. So flip it!

To demonstrate I came up with a quick pitch using my picture book:

BedtimeMonster

Here’s the pitch:

At bedtime Paul turns into a real monster. Dad understands, he used to be a little monster too–and he has the tail to prove it. #Pitmad #PB  (That’s 140 characters.)

Now the flip:

Change the hashtags around –

#Pitmad #PB At bedtime Paul turns into a real monster. Dad understands, he used to be a little monster too–and he has the tail to prove it.

#PB At bedtime Paul turns into a real monster. Dad understands, he used to be a little monster too–and he has the tail to prove it. #Pitmad

Of course, I like the first and the last way the best, but you can post up to 2 times an hour during the event(please check the #Pitmad guidelines for the most current info. The pitch rules do change from time to time), and that is a lot of posts! Just by flipping the hashtags I’ve given myself 5 posts.

Other ways you can stretch that pitch:

Move words  –

Paul turns into a real monster at bedtime. Dad understands, he used to be a little monster too–and he has the tail to prove it. #Pitmad #PB (Also 140 characters.)

Switch words –

When Paul doesn’t want to go to bed he turns into a real monster. But Dad understands–and he’s got the tail to prove it. #Pitmad #PB (134 characters.)

Show similar aspects –

When it’s time for bed, Paul turns into a real monster—claws, tail, and all. But Dad? He understands. #Pitmad #PB  (114 characters.)

Give yourself more chances and flip that pitch!

Sub It Clubber Liz Gruder shared a great tool in our Submission Support Group to make sure you stay within the proper character count. Go plug your pitch into the free Character Counter at Letter Count. (Be sure to use the character counter, not the letter counter as you have hashtag symbols in your pitch.) Thanks Liz!

It’s always good to get some extra eyes on your pitch before going public with them. Join our Sub It Club submission support group where members are helping each other polish up those pitches before they hit the web.

Best of luck with your pitches! Here’s to many requests.
